OSHAWA - A crowd of spectators scattered into the early morning darkness when Durham Regional Police officers responding to a complaint broke up a street race in north Oshawa Sunday.
Two people, one of whom was behind the wheel of a customized Chevy Vega, face numerous charges, including equipment and insurance-related infractions, said Sergeant Paul Malik.
Police are still investigating as to whether or not the race had been organized prior to the gathering. Some websites dedicated to the street racing culture are used to set up times and locations for illegal drag racing.
"I suspect it may have been (organized)," Sgt. Malik said.
"There's some indication there may be a website out there that pertains to street racing."
Police responded to a stretch of road at Thornton Road North and Winchester Road after receiving a complaint around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, according to a report. As the cops arrived, they found two vehicles lined up and apparently ready to race.
The arrival of police cruisers caused spectators to scatter, police said. The officers intervened as one vehicle was being loaded onto a trailer. The second car, described as a black Mustang with a white roof, is still being sought.
Two people, both from Lefroy, a town near Barrie, Ont., face charges.
Rodger Lohnes, 30, is charged with 13 infractions, including racing a motor vehicle, driving with improper tires and driving an unsafe vehicle. He was driving what is described as a custom 1974 Chevrolet Vega.
Dawn XXX, 28, the owner of the Vega, is charged with permitting the operation of a vehicle with no insurance.
The incident is a wake-up call in a community that has not seen much street racing of this sort, said Sgt. Malik. Concerted efforts in other GTA jurisdictions may be forcing racers to look for new locations to meet, he said.
