It can be approached by several angles. Im no VW buff but what should be considered is how much he’s willing to spend. The simple answer in a turbo setup would be to just add more boost. Of course, reliability, among other issues, becomes a growing concern.

What I’m getting at is that it makes sense to map out a proper build based on price limits. For instance, low budget may dictate a simple turbo set up with plans for high boost (not a very reliable and safe bet IMO). On the flip side, a larger budget may allow for building the engine (thus making a higher hp N\A set up) with plans for future boost FIRST and then add the turbo set up at a lower boost pressure in order to achieve similar whp as the low budget set up.

Take a look at EIP tuning. I’ve seen there set ups before and even saw some cars at last years Waterfest. They know their stuff. VR6 setups are a specialty for them. Their website has some sick vids up too.
