Yup I've broken several. That sound generally means you're on borrowed time. On the other hand I drove my car from Grand Bend to Kitchener making that noise. Now I just keep an extra axle in my car when I go racing. If you are strapped for cash, go to a junkyard and get a complete axle for your car. Just take the original out and swap in the junk one. Chances are it'll be better than what you've got, and it'll only cost you 50 bucks. BTW axles are fairly easy to change on FWD, generally just pop out the ball joint, and leave everything els attached. There may be a clip, or large nut on the end holding it in the hub carrier, but once you get that off, it should just slide out. Make sure you top off your tranny, as you may lose a little tranny fluid out the axle hole in the diff.
