Cops cap protest
By VIVIAN SONG AND IAN ROBERTSON, TORONTO SUN
Toronto's 7,700 police officers and civilian workers started working by the book at midnight this morning after backing a call for job action.
David Wilson, Toronto Police Association president, spoke to reporters after a rally by 3,000 members at the Toronto Congress Centre on Dixon Rd. and had harsh words for board chairman Pam McConnell.
"I think chair McConnell is the biggest obstacle right now, absolutely, and that's why we're calling for her resignation," Wilson said.
He said officers will engage in "phase 1" of their job action, which means police will don baseball caps and ties in union solidarity, working to rule and using their "discretion" when responding to calls.
Citing "outrageous demands" by the Toronto Police Services Board, the police association also said they would respond only to 911 calls unless a proposal to make officers work 42 extra hours a year is axed. Wilson said the extra hours amount to a week of free work.
The contract offer is for four years, by which time a first-class constable's salary would increase by 12.75%, to $75,791, the board says.
The union, which has refused to consider a longer-term contract, says officers would lose 2% of their pay in the first year. It also opposes the city's bid to reduce 3%, 6% and 9% "retention pay" bonuses initiated three years ago to stop the retirement of hundreds of veterans.
In a statement this month, the board maintained that "retention of officers is no longer an issue."
He demanded that McConnell be dismissed, after accusing her of misleading the public and engaging in bad-faith bargaining.
At police headquarters last night, McConnell scoffed at the demands for her resignation.
"I don't think the police association tells Pam McConnell what she will or won't to do," she said. "I think that's a bit of a theatrical and over-the-top kind of suggestion."
and using their "discretion" when responding to calls.
What's changed?? They've been using their ****ing discretion (wrong mostly) all the time. A. showing up to "real" situations hours/days later. B. Using their vast automotive knowledge to issue tickets for things they have no ****ing clue on.
Now, rather than wait hours upon hours if your house gets broken into, you might as well not even bother to call them since they'll show up only after your house burns down.....even then it's questionable.
Be careful folks, now that they are on job action even more of them will just be sitting behind telephone poles, sipping on some tim's and issuing traffic tickets because it's the easiest thing to do.
^I wouldnt call it an easy job. Traffic cops? Maybe....but I hear they deal with a lot of verbal abuse.
So do customer service agents making $7 bucks and hour. You don't see them going on work to rule. If a cop can't handle a little bit of verbal assault, I'd hate to see him/her in an actual criminal takedown/situation. Not saying that being a cop is an easy job, it's probably one of the hardest jobs out there. When you choose a career path you should know what to expect, especially in law enforcement.
Fix the corruption in the police force and you'll see less "verbal abuse".
I beleive for what they do theyre underpaid.
I also know plenty of customer service agents that made $45,000, and they DO complain. I also know plenty of people who make less than $12, and they do too. Theyre not unionized, they dont have the oppurtunity to strike, there is no one backing them up. THey have to just look for another job.
In todays society, the criminals got bigger and badder guns. A friend of mines fathers best friend / partnered was killed on the job in toronto. Stopping a suspicious person WALKING in parkdale. Guy open up with auto gun fire killing him before the car door was even open.... unmarked car as well...
Its not an easy job, you deal with horrible things, many times your hands are tied and you cant do shit.
I agree, tons of BS tickets for modified cars.... but are we talking people getting tickets for no cats? chopped springs? The police get paid to do a job. Some of them powertrip, some dont. When you see them enforcing the LAW, you cant really complain.

I won't touch the issue with unions because I for one am against them because IMO they only protect the lazy. If you hate your job, go find another one.
No arguement at all with what you just said regarding cops being underpaid. However, when you chose to be a cop you should know/expect that you will be dealing with the scum of society and it will not be pleasant every day. Whatever they ask for financially they should get, but you dam well know I as a citizen better get what I pay for. I deserve as a citzen to have the focus put on gun toting fu<ktards/child molesters taken off the streets instead of getting pulled over for going 10 over the limit. There are the legit trafiic fines which I agree should be given out (i.e. improperly modded rice rockets etc)
The govt should get off their ass and change the laws to impose MUCH stiffer penalties on violence with guns and violence against women/children. This will better protect the men/women in blue as well as society as a whole. It's the lazy laws we have against violent crimes that allow crimminals to be "more gansta" than ever and have the balls to shoot and kill cops because all they will get is 5 years in jail. I say burn the bastards at the stake and show it on pay per view. Watch how fast the crime rate will go down if you do that.
My issue is with poor response times on emergency calls. I would improve better response times than the usual few hours instead of having cops cars parked on the sidewalk every 100ft pulling people over going 10 over.
