The weak spot in them is the Diff Pin... It usually breaks falls in the Diff housing, and then blows a hole in the casing...
Put an LSD in it and u'r much better off... Or if you have the money, get a newer 6 speed tranny for a 24V VR and put an LSD in that.. it's a dual shaft tranny.
Or if you really have money to blow upgrade the 5spd one with Quaffe gears (straight cut gears & 6speed) and an LSD.
But honestly... just an LSD will do wonders for VW trannys. After that if you stil break it you would have broken any other FWD tranny just the same.

I already broke 3rd gear with my 94 VR6 turbo. So I'm either going to have to sell it due to other issues, or get a full race tranny for it. And I broke it on the highway, with worn street tires.

You said you wanted to make the VRT a race car so you imnd as well invest in a diff... put that in a stock tranny and run with that for now... Unless u can afford the $6k gear set from Quaffe from the get go but then you still need another tranny unless you tranny housing is still ok...

anything with a bov or open dump would be easy to question.
i'm still going with a 88-91 ef 4 door with a k or H swap...
if you saw a 4 door shit brown colour ef with nothing exterior done to it, you wouldn't think twice about running it.
Very carefully. If you know what you are doing and adjust the BOV so its constantly bleeding off the boost, most would never know it until you raced. I know it can be manually adjusted, just not sure if it can be done electronically yet.
