Vr6 Build

I have a friend of mine that is lookn into buying a golf with a vr6 in it and he was looking into getting it up to about 300-350whp and this is with boost, now i referred him to getting the greddy td04 turbo or a garret t28rs and but he doesnt know whether to do motor work such as pistons and rods and the works basically but he wants to know a rough price on what he will have to spend in order to get it up to that kind of power....if you know anything about vw or what i am talking about post something up

he is gonna need a stand alone fuel computer to tune it , a thick head gasket , and proper spark plugs and with the proper turbo setup will be no problem doing that kind of power, prices varry alot depends on what kind of stand alone and depends oh who is gonna do it

350whp can be achieved with a spacer head gasket to lower the compression.
Those turbos are too small for a vr6, tell him to get at least a T04E or GT30R.
He'll probably spend about 4000-6000 if he gets the work done @ a shop

It can be done with chip tuning.
C2 Motorsports has some great chips for VR6's, as long as it's a OBD2 car(96+). The're good till about ~420whp on their #42 program. Good A:f ratios on all of the dyno's I've seen from cars running their software

Don't get a head spacer... it positions the head farther up from the top of the cylinder block (obviously), which increases the distance between the top of the piston and the squish area in the combustion chamber (the flat spot). This reduces power because you'll be getting a slower, more incomplete burn as a result of the lack of "squish" The combustion chamber is designed with this squish area to force air/fuel towards the igntion source (spark plug). A better idea would be to learn how to tune for a higher compression engine... a higher compression engine will always have better off-boost performance and fuel economy, so I think it's a good idea to leave it alone.

It can be approached by several angles. Im no VW buff but what should be considered is how much he’s willing to spend. The simple answer in a turbo setup would be to just add more boost. Of course, reliability, among other issues, becomes a growing concern.

What I’m getting at is that it makes sense to map out a proper build based on price limits. For instance, low budget may dictate a simple turbo set up with plans for high boost (not a very reliable and safe bet IMO). On the flip side, a larger budget may allow for building the engine (thus making a higher hp N\A set up) with plans for future boost FIRST and then add the turbo set up at a lower boost pressure in order to achieve similar whp as the low budget set up.

Take a look at EIP tuning. I’ve seen there set ups before and even saw some cars at last years Waterfest. They know their stuff. VR6 setups are a specialty for them. Their website has some sick vids up too.

EIP Tuning VW Stage 1 Turbo System (330 hp, includes components and parts):

(above link assumes you mean the 12V VR6 (year 1999 to 2004). Other setups available.

Hope that gives you a bit of help.

although this is good on the theroy side of it, i know alot of people running this setup , and one person personely made 500hp on a stock motor with just the thick head gasket, so it does work.but you are right more compression = more power but less compression and more boost equals more power safely

I'm gonna have to say go with a head gasket spacer.... it works really well with VR6's... As the bottom end is already very stout, and with a HG it'll allow you to have a larger margin of error when it comes to fuel.

A VR6 with a larger HG, and at least a T4 turbo will make 400 WHP no problem... even more but then you'll probably want to go with a standalone ECU for tuning.

Although I have a buddy that is running a compleatly stock VR6 w/ a T4 @ 6psi, and he was around the 300 WHP mark with a custom dyno tuned ECU chip you're still better off going with a HG spacer.

Bang for buck is going with a HG spacer.... and if you want to run serious boost and make 500+ WHP you "should" spend the money on internals.
