As most of you, I like to work on my car to make it fun better, faster, and handle better. But once again, that problem of insurance arises. I got my mom to call insurance for me to see what they say about modifications etc, and of coruse, they say if you modify the engine or suspension (the two areas I'd focus on) they will raise the insruance price.
As an 18 eyar old who does his own stuff to his car, it's a PITA when insurance wants even MORE money, usually money that I can't afford to give to them, or in some caases I can, but just have better things to spend it on.

What is one to do? Modify the car and not tell them, hoping the car doesn't get stolen or in an accident? Modify and tell them, and get rapes with rediculously high rates?


I know tons of you must have had this problem. I remember b6t going through thiw with the Festiva, but don't remember what he ended up doing.

If you notify insurance about future/present mods, they will want you to pay more. One way "around" it is to put on upgraded "factory" parts. Example, Type R cams on your B16A or upgrading your 99 VR6 stock rims to the GTi rims, etc.

My friend actually did this to his car and insurance did not nail him for it when he hugged a street pole (2). I think that you might sneak by with internal engine mods and not tell insurance (cause they'd have to tear down the engine to really find them). However, if you get caught with mods (during an insurance claim for instance) its most likely (at best..) that you will not be insured on your upgrades and only get Blue Book value on your base model car. The worse scenario is that the insurance co. will refuse to settle the claim.
