I recomend now, especialyl after reading more in depth about these new Socket 939 Opteron's...get a dual core opteron 1.8Ghz w/ 1MB L2 cache and OC it...

ya, ive oc'd before with some success, but dealt with artifacts and some lockingup during games. It was a challenge, but not something that really interested me

More interested in just buying somethng and tossing it in a case and letting it sing on its own.....

I like Marks idea of crossfire.. I figure i will spend $500 either on a single GC or a bit more for dual to run the crossfire (reminds me of that game)

Great suggestions, not too bad. The SLI is cheaper, but i suppose your looking at it from the angle of costing more for the video cards??
My current memory and fan should work on all these setups correct?

Your memory will work no problem. not sure on your CPU fan, stock cooling is quite good on the opterons. Guys have gotten 3.0GHZ on those opterons with stock cooling.

The SLi is cheaper. Infact you can get almost identical performance to two x850's with two 6800GS's. And the GS's are cheaper. $279 Canadian @ Infonec. I'm getting my X850's from a friend. And I will watercool them, and overclock the piss out of them. But stock to stock I believe theres hardly any difference between the X850's and the 6800GS's.

The only thing is, I'm not a fan of NVidia, they're tech support or their quality.

Any NVidia card back to the 6600 (Plain ol' 6600) will work in SLi. And crossfire limits you to either the X850, X1800XL, X1800XT. In ATi's defense, they were hit with the news of SLi very swiftly and had to design Crossfire from the ground up, whereas NVidia acquired the technology from 3DFX 6 years ago when they bought them.

SLi was around years ago, I believe the first mag I read with cards in SLi was in 1998, but it flopped, there was no market back then, since most onboard cards could play most games.
