Rogers Canada / Shaw, and alot of other ISP have just seriously screwed their users.
Currently alot of isp's have implimented a system called file shaping. It looks what what your downloading and it notices if you are downloading the same file from more than 1 source. If you are it dumps the download and you have to find more sources again. They claim it will only affect 2% of people who use their server but are totaly wrong. It appears to affrect programs such as pod cast, Bit Torrent , I tunes and many other things. ISP a often telling users its a problem with the firewall. After multiple Calls to my isp they finally told me about the system the have implimented. I'm certainly not pleased because our school has a Bit Torrent system set up so you can download missed notes and other things like that with out using our server bandwith. I dont know how an isp can justify doing this when in the contract i signed it says "Unlimited Internet Access" AsFar as i know this is not unlimited and therefor in breach of the contract. I Talked to one of the Representative and cornered him with some legal bull shit and he replied he cannot comment on this or the legal status. After that he hung up on me. I phoned back only to get a different person. I suggest you all do the same and harrass you isp until they change your connection back to normal because its just a software setting.
In the meantime i have a little work around that you can use if your isp has done this. If you isp offers VOIP like Mine does Rogers Canada, then you can set up a program such as bit commet to use the VOIP port 1720 and there is nothing they can do about that currently. When i did this my speeds went back up to semi normal. Not as fast as they were before this traffic shapping system but alot faster then they were after. This also kills our upload, So alot of Canadian users and Britian users will have uploads that go to shit. Any Ways if anybody fees like shedding some light on the situation it would be greatly appreciated.
Anyways Try the port 1720 because it worked for me so far.
Keep contacting your isp and complain to them until they are fed up with all these people complaining. Threaten to cancle your service and say you are speaking on the behalf of other people as well as yourself. Post this info around the internet. Maybe if enough people start boycotting these isps and find new ones, the ones with this feature implimented will decide to reverse what they have done. And what they have done is in breach of a legal contract.
Anyone surprised? We've been getting screwed by everyone else. Right now the CRTC is screwing us, by not allowing us to pay for all of Sirius satellites programming. I don't know about you, but I don't remember moving to Russia. What's next? No porn rentals either? If we are paying for a service, there is nothing they should be able to do about it. If everyone calls and complains, well, maybe something will be done.
I use bitlord, and limewire. Speeds aren't too bad. average 4 to 8 hours for average movie. It's a free movie. DVD's are still $15 bucks for a used one, so, the 100 DVDr's I've got cost me $30 bucks, and the lnternet is about 40, so if I download and burn 4 movies a month, I'm ahead. Oh and got Nero 7 with smartstart off limewire. Works great. Can burn a dvdr to play in my 24.99 dvd player from crappy tire.
